Geek Of The Week January 22, 2010

This week’s Geek of the Week goes to Joe “Covenant” Lamb (@JoeCovenant). Joe was my featured independent musician for the month of November, so you may be asking yourself, “Why is he being awarded Geek of the Week?” There are a few reasons for this.

  1. Even so he announced it some time ago, earlier this week the official announcement was made awarding Joe the title of Master of Song Fu #5! He won the first 3 rounds. Now his winning of title was a little bitter-sweet. The master Joe was to compete against had to back out last minute due to holiday scheduling conflicts. As Joe had the most number of votes for all three rounds, Joe was handed the title of Master of Song Fu. Despite not having the opportunity to battle it out for one final round, Joe decided to write a song anyway. Here is what Joe had to say about this: “Well…
After being told by Ken Plume that the Master had to pull out of the final of Song Fu 5, I was named “Master” by reason of there being no master to go against.
I felt both happy at ‘winning’ but a little dissapointed at not being able to do that one last round.

So, I thought I would do a song and send it in anyway.

I had to think of my own challenge and give myself a week to do it (as normal) so when I came to think of what do do AS a challenge I thought… my first real Song Fu challenge was “Write a Happy Song”, so, why not, for this, my own Master Challenge, “Write a SAD song.” ?

This is it.” And here is his final submission Life is Hard (… and Then You Die)

  2. Joe is part of this amazing online community called Too Much Awesome. It is a place where new model musicians and their fans can hang out and just be awesome. It was started by Mike Lombardo and Jeff MacDougall. The community is busy working on a project that involves doing covers of other musicians but in a different style. Joe has been known to do a few Jonathan Coulton covers. In his latest cover, he performs Today’s the Day by Inverse T. Clown. This has to be one of the best break-up songs ever and I absolutely love the cover. Behold! The video!
  3. And finally, next week (January 25) is Robbie Burns Day. The past few weeks, Joe has been busy composing a new album entitled Banned Burns in honour of this poet, based off of a collection known as The Merry Muses of Caledonia. You can find what he was done so far here. There are currently 5 songs in this collection, all under 2 minutes long.
