SETI + Astronomy + Star Trek + Death From The Skies! = Geekasm!

If you missed the exciting announcement about SETIcon, let me fill you in. SETIcon is a dream come true! It will be held at the Hyatt Recency in Santa Clara from August 13 – 15, 2010 and will be a geekasmic celebration of Astronomy, SETI, Star Trek and science fiction in general. Tickets are dirt cheap as well,$20 a day or $35 dollars for the full weekend. From the SETIcon homepage:

What is SETIcon?

To show our appreciation and to create an opportunity for the public to interact with our team, we decided to host an event that would be both educational and fun.  SETIcon will be a family friendly event that will appeal to everyone from the hard core scientist or enthusiast who wants to know the nitty-gritty of how science really works, to the 5th grader interested in the wonders of space.

SETIcon features:

  • Noted scientists explaining new developments in everyday language
  • Stars of science fiction TV series and movies, plus the advisors who helped with the science
  • Panels to air controversial issues and share perspectives
  • Special sessions where you can ask questions of your favorite guests in a smaller setting
  • A family room with hands-on activities (for kids 12 and older)

Some of the guests include: John Billingsley, Tim Russ, Apollo 9 astronaut Rusty Schweikart, Debra Fischer, Kevin Grazier and Mr @BadAstronomer himself, Phil Plait who will most likely be giving his Death From The Skies! talk.

In honour of this, there was a very awesome comic posted on SMBC today. As I said on Twitter, it would not surprise me at all if Phil were to do something like that because not only is he smart but he is funny. If you go over to the SMBC site (click the link above), push the red button at the end of the comic for more hilarity.
