16267_249269163867_18542008867_4332455_715316_nIt is my great pleasure to feature Jeff MacDougall as Geeky Pleasures’ Featured Independent Musician for the month of October (insert fanfare here)!

I got to know Jeff through the wonderful people of Too Much Awesome, a new model musician community, which sprung up around Masters of Song Fu. Jeff was one of the co-founders, along with former Independent Musician of the Month, Mike Lombardo.

Below, you will find his bio, current projects he is working on, samples of his music and links to all the wonderful places you can find him online. If you are viewing this post in an RSS reader, you will need to visit the site in order to listen to the music. Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you: Jeff MacDougall.

Bio

44740_491403288867_18542008867_6901691_5580314_nIn 1992 (after playing in bands and writing many songs), I realized that making significant amounts of money in the music business as an artist wasn’t much different from winning the lottery, so I reluctantly placed making music into the “hobby” category. In 2008, I happened upon a music podcast that featured unsigned artists and enjoyed an interview with Jonathan Coulton.  That’s when I knew things had evolved to a place where “music for a living” might be worth doing again.  Two days later (after pouring over JoCo’s website) he wrote a post on his blog promoting a little song writing contest entitled ‘Masters of Song Fu’. I signed up and haven’t looked back.

Projects he is currently working on:

Songs 4 Sub

song4subfinalI have a new YouTube/Album project entitled ‘Song 4 Sub’. I will be selecting 10 of my You Tube subscribers, at random, each to be the subject of a song. These will be fully produced video songs and I will post each one on my YouTube Channel and Bandcamp page once they are done. Once I finish the 10th song, I will collect all the songs together and release them on CD.

Here’s how it works:

I will randomly choose one of my YouTube subscribers each time I reach a designated amount of subscribers, then write a song about them.  I have decided on the obvious markers of 100, 200, 300, etc., up to 1000.  For example, once I reach four hundred subscribers (as of this writing I’m at 351) I will randomly select a subscriber, contact them to make sure they are willing to be the subject of a song, then begin writing and recording. And yes, subscribers 1,2 and 3 have already been selected.  So, if you want to be entered into the ‘Song 4 Sub’ raffle, make sure you go to my YouTube page and hit that subscribe button.

SpinTunes

spintunes-logoI’ve been asked to be a judge in the latest round of the Spintunes songwriting contest.  If you enjoy independent music and mud wrestling (okay, there isn’t any mud wrestling) then you should definitely check it out.  I still haven’t decided if I want to take a Simon-esque approach and be the pull no punches hardass or a Paula-ish one… and pop some pills before I give everything a good once over.  Seriously though, there are some very talented people participating in this contest so urge you to take a listen.
