It is with my absolute pleasure that I present to you my Featured Independent Musician for the month of February: Chris Cogott (@chriscogott).

Chris made it to my music radar during the White Elephant Music Club‘s first music challenge, The Skultar Sword and Sorcery challenge (which he won), where I immediately adored his music. He further impressed me during SpinTunes 2 (in which he came in 2nd). I knew then that I wanted to feature him. Then he caused me to have all kinds of geekasms with the song he wrote for The Geeky Pleasures Radio theme song. There is something so very wonderful about his music, which I wish I could properly articulate. But as always, below you’ll find his bio, some of his songs and links to other places you can find him online, leaving you to figure out for yourself what makes him music unique. If you are viewing this in an RSS reader, you may need to visit the site in order to listen to the songs.

So without further ado:

Hmmm, where do I start? I guess I’m lucky to have an older brother that had a well established record collection for me to raid as a kid. This is when I discovered The Beatles, and was hooked on music ever since. I still remember listening to them over and over, as I do today, and picking out harmonies which became something I really enjoyed doing and still do.

Fast forward some years…to when I discovered my brother’s acoustic guitar. This guitar had the most PAINFUL mountain high action I have ever played on, so I went out and bought an electric guitar simply because it was much easier to play. I taught myself how to play by playing along to music, studying books, and playing with others who were light years ahead of me. I never had the patience for real lessons. On the job training has always been the best way for me to learn.

I played in many bands leading up to now. Original and cover bands, but by far the most fun I had was writing songs. The last band I was in was a cover band called Page22, and they’re still going strong here in NJ. I left the band due to my current job schedule and that had me twiddling my thumbs a bit, until I discovered an interview on Yahoo about Jonathan Coulton. I was completely blown away by his music and use of the internet to distribute his songs, etc. That opened up the door and gave me an outlet for playing music again for people to hear. Almost like being in a band again, but not quite.

This brings me to where I am today. In the past couple of years I started up my website (still learning this process), and learned ProTools for recording my music (always a learning process). Last year has been the year of music competitions. Nur Ein, White Elephant, and the last one, SpinTunes #2. I’m not sure what draws me to them. I think it’s getting to know the awesome people involved. It’s certainly not the gut wrenching stress of writing songs for a short deadline. The last thing I did for the year was to write a theme song for Jules’ Geeky Pleasures Radio Show which can now be heard at the beginning of her show every Friday evening. A big thanks to Jules for giving me the opportunity!

As for the future, I had a little project I was going to do that fell through but there is still a possibility it may work later on. I’ll keep you posted. In the meantime, I have been working on an album which I’ll be completing for the summer. That’s it for now. I’d like to give another big thanks to all of you who have listened to and hopefully enjoyed the music. I hope to hear from more of you during the year and years to come. And the biggest thanks goes to my wife for her support and putting up with my nonsense.

Rock on,

Chris
